How "Organic" are Organic Foods?

In early years, people were used to organic food it wasn't until the 20th century when chemical fertilizers were introduced to crop production. Only in the 1940's, that organic foods were revived during the Green Revolution. Around 1940 to 1970, a series of researches, developments and technology initiatives where run to increase agriculture production around the world.

Being organic relates to having no exposure to any synthetic or chemical substance may it be for mass production or to alter its original form. So basically, organic foods are fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products and even fish which were not processed or produced using any synthetic or chemical fertilizer, did not undergone irradiation, or biotechnology. For the animal produce, they were most likely fed with organic food, and did not receive any antibiotics and hormonal or growth enhancers.

Also, to be considered organic, the products did not undergo any modification and have no exposure to any form of synthetic or chemical fertilizers and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). GMOs are plants or animals whose DNA had been altered and had undergone short-term testing to see its effect on humans and environment. Organic foods were mainly distributed and sold on organic farms.

Different studies were conducted whether organic foods are better that its counterparts, which had undergone different process and is exposed to chemicals. However, these studies had shown different results.

Here are some of the benefits of organic foods:

First of course is, it has lesser exposure to chemicals. As we know it, these chemicals may affect the human body targeting the immune system most likely to children as theirs are still fully developed. It may also lead to behavioral disorders and developmental delays. In addition, having no exposure to chemicals makes the plants produce more of its natural defenses to bugs and other microorganisms. Next would be organic foods are fresh and crisp as it does not contain any preservative that make it last longer than the usual.

The second benefit would be is that organic farming do not just give us fresh produce but it also environment friendly. It reduces pollution not only in the air but as well in water and soil. It does also help in conservation of water. Most of all, it uses lesser energy. In addition, a study in the US had shown results that consuming of organic foods might be associated with longer lives.

In order for farms to market their goods as organic, a special certificate must be obtained. This certificate abides with the standard procedures set by the national government and international organizations. The US, European Union, Canada and Australia are just to name a few of those countries that regulates organic foods.

With all the diseases we're hearing about from produce farms, dairy farms, or meat distributors, people are being more conscious of their food. As technology becomes more abundant, people yet find ways to live simple and putting their health on top of the list. It only shows that people of today are becoming more balanced and more rational.
